toxahost.ru :: wardriving project
I used to be a wardriving junkie!
Software and hardware I use:
- Laptop: Sony VAIO PCG-V505BX
- GPS: Garmin eTrex Vista
- WiFi card: PCMCIA Orinoco Gold 8470WD (Atheros chipset)
- Software: FreeBSD 7-CURRENT,
Kismet,
gpsd, gpsmap
(with gmap patch)
- City: Saint-Petersburg, Russia
- Car: Obviously, you need a comfortable car ;)
Check out our night wardriving session!
The MAP:
One Big Picture
(Updates every wardriving session)
Summary networks table
(produced by slightly modified kismet2html script)
Howto:
- My WiFi card uses Atheros chipset, so kldload if_ath.ko, plug card in and make sure ath0 created
- My GPS has serial interface, my laptop has usb ports only, so I take com2usb adapter and kldload uplcom.ko
- Plug in GPS device, make sure that /dev/cuaU0 created.
- Reconfigure my GPS device to use NMEA In/NMEA Out protocol (it was "Garmin" by default)
- Run gpsd with debug messages, in foreground: gpsd -N -D 10 /dev/cuaU0
- Tweak kismet.conf to work with ath0 and gpsd, and run it as regular user: sudo kismet
- Go drive, drive, drive down the streets in the city! :)
- Turn collected kismet logfiles into .js file as described onto gmap page: gpsmap -j -e -t -r -u Kismet-XXX.gps
- Put it all onto webserver: http://www.toxahost.ru/wardriving_spb/
Finally, here will be one big merged map ;)
